PLIMS stands for Plymouth Locality Immediate Medical Support. We are a charitable organisation founded in 1991. Our volunteer members provide immediate medical care for people in Plymouth and the surrounding areas. Our main roles are:
(1) Working with the ambulance service, responding to scenes where there may be serious trauma or time-critical medical emergencies (2) Providing medical command and operational teams in the event of major incidents. In this regard we have a strong relationship with Derriford Hospital, in addition to our links with the ambulance service (3) Providing training and support for the development of prehospital care in our region
Our members are all volunteers, dedicated to providing the highest standards of care. We are called out from home or occasionally from our places of work, using our own vehicles.
Many of our members also work as independant practitioners providing medical cover at sporting and community events, although this is not directly through PLIMS
Our operational area includes Plymouth, West Devon, SE Cornwall, South Hams. We also support practitioners working in nearby areas where there are no local schemes. PLIMS is one of several immediate care schemes in the South West – other schemes are SAVES in Somerset, TACTICS in North Devon, and BASICS Cornwall. Links to these organisations can be found here
PLIMS is part of BASICS – the British Association for Immediate Care. BASICS aims to provide a focus for, and support the development of, pre-hospital emergency care around the UK
